Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs—he wants to please his commanding officer. Similarly, if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor's crown unless he competes according to the rules. The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops. Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this.
The first verse of ONWARD CHRISTIAN WARRIOR goes like this:
Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
with the cross of Jesus going on before.
Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe;
forward into battle see his banners go!
There is something to that.
- Every day we are called, like a soldier, to duty… to wage war against the enemies of the Gospel.
- We are like the athlete who competes… who sees the finish line and MUST PRESS ON!
- We are like the farmer who can take pleasure in his work.
Why not do what Paul tells his young protégé (Timothy) and reflect on what what Paul wrote.
